Renewing a green card online looks like a one-evening job, until USCIS sends it back. The three usual reasons are the wrong filing reason, a blurred card upload and filing too early, and each one can cost you the $415 fee and months of waiting while your card sits expired. New American Hope prepares and submits your Form I-90 for you: you give us your card details, we complete the form and check the upload, and you review and confirm every answer before it goes in. Below is what the online renewal involves, who cannot use it, and where people lose time and money.
Can you renew your green card online?
Most people can. Online filing works if all of these are true:
- You hold a 10-year green card that has expired or will expire within the next six months. File earlier and USCIS may deny it.
- You are not asking for a fee waiver. USCIS does not accept an I-90 fee waiver request online; that has to go on paper.
- You are not a conditional resident. A 2-year card is never renewed with an I-90; it is replaced by removing the conditions on Form I-751 (marriage) or I-829 (investment).
Not sure which of these applies to you? We go through the published USCIS requirements with you on the free call, and our main guide to green card renewal covers the other routes.
| Online | Paper | |
|---|---|---|
| Filing fee (biometrics included) | $415 | $465 |
| How it is paid | Debit or credit card or bank account, through Pay.gov | Check, money order or card form, mailed with the application |
| Receipt notice | Appears in the USCIS account, also mailed | Mailed only |
| Evidence | Photo or scan uploaded | Photocopies mailed |
| Fee waiver | Not available | Available with Form I-912 |
Online is $50 cheaper and confirms faster, so it is the route we use for most renewals. Renewing for more than one family member? Our USCIS fee calculator totals the government fees, and we can file the whole family together.
What we need from you
Five things, sent by WhatsApp or email. Everything else is our job, and our USCIS document checklist lists them for your situation.
- Your current green card, front and back, as a clear photo. We tell you straight away if the photo will pass.
- Your A-Number (the USCIS number on the card) and the card’s expiry date.
- An email address that only you use, so USCIS notices do not get lost in a shared family inbox.
- A debit or credit card for the $415 USCIS fee, which you pay directly to the government.
- If your name has changed since the card was issued: the marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order. A name change is filed under a different reason; you confirm it and we complete the form.
How the online renewal works, and what we handle
Form I-90 is filed through a USCIS online account. These are the stages, the place each one usually goes wrong, and who does the work when you file with us.
| Stage | Where it goes wrong | With New American Hope |
|---|---|---|
| 1. USCIS online account | Shared emails and family accounts, so notices go to the wrong person | You create it in your own name; we show you how |
| 2. Filing reason | Choosing “replacement” for a renewal, the most common cause of a rejected I-90 | We complete the form from your answers, and you confirm the reason before it is filed |
| 3. Biographic answers | Details that do not match the card exactly | We fill every answer from your card and you check it |
| 4. Card upload | Blurred, cropped or glare-covered photos, the second most common reason a case stalls | We check both sides before upload |
| 5. Signature and fee | Paying before the form is right | You approve the final summary, then sign and pay $415 to USCIS |
| 6. Receipt notice | Not knowing what it proves, or losing it | We explain what USCIS says it covers for work and travel |
| 7. Biometrics | Missing the appointment notice | You forward the notice; we remind you of the date |
| 8. Tracking | Silence for months and no idea when to ask | We keep you updated until the new card arrives |
One fact worth knowing either way: once the receipt notice (Form I-797C) arrives, the receipt plus your old card prove your permanent resident status for 36 months from the card’s expiry date, for work, travel and licence renewals. USCIS says acceptance can take up to 30 days. For the current wait, see our guide to green card renewal processing time or the USCIS processing time checker.

Name change, lost card or damaged card?
These are replacements, not renewals, and they use different reasons on the same Form I-90:
- Name changed since the card was issued: the name-change reason, with the legal document that changed it.
- Card lost or stolen: the lost or stolen reason, with a copy of the card if you have one and a government photo ID.
- Card damaged: the damaged reason; USCIS may ask for the damaged card.
The fee is the same. What changes is the evidence, and the right reason matters more than anything else on the form. Tell us what happened and we complete the form for the reason you confirm.
Mistakes that send an online I-90 back
We check every one of these before anything is submitted:
- Filing too early. More than six months before the expiry date, a renewal “may be denied” under the form’s own instructions.
- Renewing a 2-year card with I-90. Conditional residents file I-751 or I-829 instead.
- Choosing the wrong reason, especially “replacement” for a simple renewal.
- A blurred or cropped card upload. Both sides, all four corners, no glare.
- Using someone else’s USCIS account or email. Notices go to the account holder.
- Throwing the old card away. Without it, the receipt notice alone does not prove status.
The verdict
The online I-90 is quick when everything is right and expensive when one thing is wrong: a rejected renewal means a lost fee, a new filing and months more on an expired card. If you would rather not carry that risk alone, let us prepare it. You send a photo of your card, confirm the final form and pay the USCIS fee; we handle the paperwork and keep you updated until the new card is in your hands.

Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my green card online?
Yes, if you hold a 10-year green card that has expired or will expire within six months, you are not asking for a fee waiver, and you are not a conditional resident. Form I-90 is filed through a USCIS online account with copies of your card, and the fee is paid through Pay.gov.
How much does it cost to renew a green card online?
$415 online, compared with $465 on paper, under USCIS Form G-1055 Edition 09/09/26. The biometrics cost is included in that fee. A fee waiver cannot be requested online; it has to be filed on paper with Form I-912.
How early can I renew my green card?
Within six months of the expiry date, or any time after it has expired. The Form I-90 instructions say that if your card will not expire within six months when you file for this reason, the application may be denied.
What documents do I upload to renew my green card online?
A clear copy of the front and back of your current green card. If your name has changed since the card was issued, that is a replacement rather than a renewal, and you also upload the legal document that changed it, such as a marriage certificate or court order.
What proves my status while my green card renewal is pending?
The Form I-90 receipt notice together with your expired green card. USCIS states that the two together provide evidence of lawful permanent resident status for 36 months from the card's expiration date, which covers work, travel and licence renewals while the new card is produced.
