USCIS Processing Time Checker

How to read a USCIS processing time

The time USCIS publishes is not a countdown for your case. It shows how long USCIS took to finish 80% of similar cases over the last six months, for one form at one office. Your own case can be faster or slower.

Two things decide which number applies to you: the form you filed and the office handling it. Both are printed on your receipt notice (Form I-797C). If your case moves to another office, the time that applies changes with it.

I-130 family petition

The petition only approves the relationship. For spouses, parents and children under 21 of U.S. citizens, the next step can start right away. Other family categories also wait for a visa number.

I-485 green card application

Handled by your local field office, so it varies the most by city. Most cases include fingerprints and an interview before a decision.

I-130 vs I-485: what each one does

I-765 work permit

Most renewals filed on or after 30 October 2025 no longer get an automatic extension, so filing early (up to 180 days before expiry) matters more than before.

I-90 green card renewal

The wait is long, but your I-90 receipt notice together with your old card proves your status for 36 months from the card's expiry date.

Green card renewal processing time

I-751 removing conditions

One of the longest waits. The I-751 receipt notice extends your 2-year green card for 48 months, so you can keep working and travelling.

Green card through marriage

N-400 citizenship

Usually one of the shorter waits. For applications filed on or after 12 December 2022, the receipt notice extends your green card for 24 months.

N-400 processing time

I-129F fiancé(e) petition

After USCIS approves it, the case moves to the State Department and the U.S. embassy, which adds its own wait before the K-1 visa.

I-131 travel permit

If you have a pending I-485, leaving the U.S. without an approved travel permit can end your green card application. Plan trips around this wait.

Case taking longer than the time shown?

  1. Check the inquiry date. USCIS publishes a "receipt date for a case inquiry" next to each processing time. If your receipt date is earlier than that date, your case is outside normal processing time and you can ask USCIS about it. Before that date, USCIS will not accept the request.
  2. Send a case inquiry. The request is made online or through the USCIS Contact Center, using the receipt number on your I-797C.
  3. Ask for an expedite only for a real reason. USCIS considers severe financial loss, an urgent humanitarian situation or a clear USCIS error, with documents to prove it. The decision is at USCIS's discretion.

New American Hope helps you put the inquiry or expedite request together, with the right receipt details and supporting documents, so you can send it. We cannot speed up USCIS, and nobody honest can promise that.

What slows a case down

  • A Request for Evidence (RFE). A missing document adds weeks or months while USCIS waits for your reply.
  • Wrong fee or old form edition. USCIS rejects the package and you start again.
  • Moving without telling USCIS. Notices go to the old address. Report a move within 10 days.
  • Missing the biometrics appointment. The case stalls until it is rescheduled.
  • Names and dates that don't match across passports, certificates and forms.

Most of these are avoidable before you file. New American Hope completes your forms from your information and checks the package against the USCIS form instructions before it goes in. Help in English, Urdu or Punjabi.

Processing time questions

How accurate is the USCIS processing time?

It shows how long USCIS took to finish 80% of similar cases over the last six months. It describes past cases, so your case can be faster or slower.

Why is my office slower than others?

Each office has its own workload and staffing. Green card and citizenship cases go to your local field office, so the wait depends on where you live.

Can I contact USCIS before the time shown has passed?

You can check your status online at any time, but USCIS only accepts a case inquiry once your receipt date is earlier than the inquiry date it publishes for your form and office.

Is filing online faster?

Filing online gives you a receipt straight away and avoids mail delays at the start. USCIS does not promise a faster decision for online cases.

Does my green card stop being valid while I renew it?

No. Your I-90 receipt notice together with your old card proves your permanent resident status for 36 months from the card's expiry date.

Can I work while my work permit renewal is pending?

For most renewals filed on or after 30 October 2025 there is no automatic extension, so you can only work on the current card until it expires. File as early as allowed, up to 180 days before expiry.

Processing times come from the USCIS processing times page and change every month. New American Hope LLC is a bonded California immigration consultant, not an attorney, and cannot give legal advice or speed up a USCIS decision.
