You filed Form I-90, paid the fee, and now the real question starts: how long until the new green card arrives? The wait is set by USCIS workload, not by your file, and the posted time has moved by many months in both directions in recent years. What adds months on top is usually in the filing itself: an unreadable card copy or the wrong filing reason, each one a request for evidence or a fresh start. New American Hope prepares and submits your Form I-90 for you, then tracks it: you give us your card details, we complete the form, you confirm every answer, and we keep you updated through the green card renewal processing time.
How long does green card renewal take?
USCIS publishes a live processing time for Form I-90 on its official processing times page. That number is not a promise: it is how long USCIS took to finish 80% of I-90 cases over the last six months. One in five cases took longer, and the figure is updated as the backlog changes.
That is why this guide does not print a month count. A number written today is wrong by next season. Our USCIS processing time checker points you to the right form and category for the current figure, and the stages below show where a case sits.
The good news: for most people the wait matters far less than it seems, because your status and your right to work and travel do not stop when the card expires.
The stages of an I-90 renewal
| Stage | What happens | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Acceptance | USCIS checks the form is complete, signed and paid. Online filings can take up to 30 days to be accepted. | Receipt notice (Form I-797C) |
| 2. Biometrics | Fingerprints, photo and signature at an Application Support Center, or reuse of your earlier biometrics. | Appointment notice by mail, if needed |
| 3. Review | An officer reviews the file and runs background checks. | Status updates in your account |
| 4. Request for more information | Only if something is missing or unclear, such as an unreadable card copy. | Request for Evidence (RFE) with a deadline |
| 5. Interview | Rare for a renewal, used when USCIS needs to confirm identity or eligibility. | Interview notice |
| 6. Decision and card | Approval, then the card is produced and mailed. | New 10-year green card |
Most renewals go 1, 2, 3, 6. Stages 4 and 5 are the ones that add months, and both are usually triggered by something in the filing itself, the part we complete and check with you first.
What proves your status while you wait
This is the part that removes most of the stress. USCIS states that your I-90 receipt notice, together with your expired or expiring green card, is evidence of your permanent resident status for 36 months from the expiration date on the card, and that you remain authorized to work and travel.
- Keep both documents together. The receipt alone, or the old card alone, is not enough.
- For work and travel, carry the pair. If an employer or airline officer is unsure, the wording is printed on the receipt notice itself.
- Filed online? The receipt notice is also saved in your USCIS account, so a lost paper copy can be downloaded again.
- No longer have the card (lost, stolen or sent in)? USCIS may issue an ADIT stamp as temporary proof, through an appointment requested from the USCIS Contact Center.
Thirty-six months is far longer than a typical renewal, which is why a slow case is usually an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
What slows a green card renewal down
We check every one of these before anything is filed:
- A blurred or cropped card copy. It is the most common trigger for a request for evidence, and each request adds weeks or months.
- The wrong filing reason. Choosing a replacement reason for a simple renewal, or renewing more than six months early, can lead to a denial and a fresh start.
- Filing on paper. A paper form has to be mailed, opened and entered before the clock visibly starts. Online filing shows the receipt in your account.
- A missed biometrics appointment. Rescheduling has to happen before the date, not after, following the instructions on the notice.
- An old address. A move has to be reported to USCIS within 10 days, or the card can be mailed to the wrong place.
- Criminal history or past immigration issues. These can lead to an interview and a longer review. If this applies to you, we refer you to an attorney before anything is filed.

How to check your I-90 case status
| Stage | Where it goes wrong | With New American Hope |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Receipt number | Not knowing where it is: it starts with three letters on the I-797C, such as IOE for an online filing | You forward the notice; we log the number and date |
| 2. Case status | Checking daily and reading silence as a problem | You check your own USCIS account or the case status tool and send us anything new |
| 3. Inquiry date | Asking USCIS too early, before the inquiry date the processing times page gives for your receipt date | We compare your receipt date with the posted time and note your inquiry date |
A case that shows no update for weeks is normal. Silence is not a sign of a problem.
Can you speed up a green card renewal?
After the inquiry date: if your case is still pending past the date USCIS gives for your receipt, a “case outside normal processing time” request can be submitted online. Before that date, USCIS will not accept one.
Expedite request: USCIS considers expediting a case for severe financial loss, an emergency or urgent humanitarian situation, a request from a qualifying nonprofit, government interests, or a clear USCIS error. The request goes through the USCIS Contact Center or secure messaging in your online account, with supporting documents, which we help you gather. USCIS states the decision is at its sole discretion, and a card that has simply expired is usually not enough, because the receipt already proves your status.
Eligible to naturalize? If you can already apply for citizenship, the N-400 receipt notice (for applications filed on or after 12 December 2022) extends your green card for 24 months, and becoming a citizen ends the renewal cycle for good. Our guide to N-400 processing time shows what that path looks like.
Doing it yourself vs filing with New American Hope
| On your own | With New American Hope | |
|---|---|---|
| Form and card upload | A blurred copy or wrong answer can trigger an RFE | Completed by us, confirmed by you |
| If USCIS asks for more | You read the request and respond alone | We help you gather what is asked for, and refer you to an attorney if it needs legal argument |
| The wait | Tracking dates and notices yourself | We note your inquiry date and keep you updated |
| Language | English-only notices | English, Urdu or Punjabi |
| Cost | USCIS fee only | The same USCIS fee plus our flat fee, quoted in writing first |
The verdict
Green card renewal time is the one part nobody can control, and it matters less than it feels: the receipt notice and your old card keep you covered for three years. What can be controlled is the filing: the right reason, a clean card copy, online filing and a current address. That part we handle.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to renew a green card?
It depends on USCIS workload at the time you file. USCIS posts a live processing time for Form I-90, based on how long it took to complete 80% of cases over the last six months, so the official processing times page gives the current figure rather than an old estimate.
Can I travel while my green card renewal is pending?
Yes. USCIS states that the I-90 receipt notice together with your expired or expiring green card is evidence of permanent resident status for 36 months from the card's expiration date, and that you remain authorized to work and travel. Carry both documents together.
How do I check my green card renewal status?
Use the receipt number on your Form I-797C receipt notice in your USCIS online account or the USCIS case status tool. The processing times page also gives an inquiry date for your receipt date, after which USCIS can be asked about a delayed case.
Can I expedite my green card renewal?
You can ask, but the decision is at the sole discretion of USCIS. It considers severe financial loss, emergencies or urgent humanitarian situations, nonprofit requests, government interests and clear USCIS error. Because the receipt notice already proves your status, an expired card alone is usually not a reason to expedite.
What slows down a green card renewal?
The most common causes are an unreadable copy of the card, choosing the wrong filing reason, filing more than six months before the card expires, a missed biometrics appointment, and an out-of-date mailing address. Each can lead to a request for evidence, a reschedule or a denial.
